On October 8, 2021, Derek E. Smith was killed by a stranger. As Derek was sitting with a friend on an outdoor patio, Lonnell Anderson approached and shot the 31-year-old father twice in the back of the head, then ran away. After his arrest, Lonnell told a detective, "I don't like white people... They call you nigger behind your back."
